Neighborhood Guides

Moraga

Moraga is a suburb of about 17,000 residents east of San Francisco just over the Berkeley Hills between the Caldecott Tunnel and Walnut Creek along Highway 24. Along with Lafayette and Orinda, Moraga is part of a group of three similar towns that are nicknamed Lamorinda.

Lafayette, Orinda and Moraga share similar characteristics as single-family suburban communities that have some of the top public schools in all of California and their proximity to San Francisco tends to attract a more affluent population base. Moraga is the smallest of the three towns and is known to be a bit quieter due to its location further from Highway 24. Moraga is home to the beautiful Saint Mary’s College of California, and in recent years its high school, Campolindo, has bested its Orinda and Lafayette rivals in athletics more often than not. Moraga has frequently been named a top suburb for living and learning by various publications.

Moraga Country Club (MCC)

Located just south of Moraga Way, MCC is a private community with all homes required to pay a HOA which grants membership and access to Moraga Country Club. Along with single family homes, MCC has a variety of townhomes interspersed around the golf course. MCC borders Moraga’s small downtown, with a grocery, hardware, and drug store alongside restaurants and shops. The hot spot in the area is Canyon Club Brewery, a family-friendly brewpub with great beer, food, and outdoor space. MCC forms the eastern border of Moraga and is located right next to Miramonte, Orinda’s high school.

Rheem/Rheem Valley Manor

Rheem was originally a distinct community that eventually merged with Moraga in 1974. It has its own downtown retail district that includes the Rheem Theater, the areas best drive-through Starbucks, and, surprisingly, large TJ Maxx and Home Goods stores. Rheem Valley Manor is located southeast of the rest of Rheem and has a bunch of homes on mid-sized lots situated on gently rolling hills.

Corliss

Corliss is located just across Moraga Rd from Rheem Valley Manor and has a similar feel to its eastern neighbor. Corliss backs up to the Mullholland Ridge Open Space preserve, a hilltop that separates it from Rheem and Campolindo.

Larch / Sanders Ranch

Larch and Sanders Ranch mark the southernmost neighborhoods in Moraga. This puts them furthers from the freeway, which could be a pro or con depending on your point of view. Larch is a quiet, largely flat neighborhood with a good number of sidewalks. Sanders Ranch was a high-end development when built in the 1980s, and as a result it boasts some of the largest homes in the area.
